Description

This is one of the illustrations for my "Strange Tales of the American South" book.

:iconimhappyplz:

I spent three or four hours watercoloring the original, but it just didn't look good. =/ The colors were all blotchy and gross, so I just took it into Photo-shoop and shooped it up.

The gist of the story is that a poor Haitian girl can't afford a dress for the prom, so she steals one off the body of a girl in the funeral home. She goes to the prom, but becomes very ill and it gets to the point where she can't even move. She's mistaken for dead and put in a coffin for burial, though she is still aware of everything around her.

The story ends with our Haitian thief overhearing a story from two gravediggers. Turns out, the dress she stole had been dusted with voodoo zombie powder, and a few minutes after she had taken it, the "dead" girl miraculously got up since the dress had been removed.

HAHAHA OH GOD SOUTHERN PEOPLE THINK OF THE CRAZIEST THINGS LOLOLOLOLOL

Interesting. Your drawing also reminds me of Cathy in the novel "Windward Heights"-- a Haitian version of the Bronte novel.
